We want to take this blog as an opportunity to thank all of our customers, family and friends. We weathered this year with some awesome, some good, some bad and some ugly times. Without all of you, none of this would be possible. THANK YOU!!!
Moving forward through the holiday season, we have a lot more to offer you. We have a wonderful pastry chef, Phil Roberts, who has us up to our eyeballs in pies, mousse, cakes, and you name it. In addition, we have brought on a dynamic wonderful new manager, Lynette Carrington who is taking the reins over to provide that personal customer experience you have come accustomed to at our store.
The holiday season is a time for us to shine and show you how fabulous our treats can be on your party table, dinner table and as gifts.
Starting December 6th, we will be offering gift baskets. Yes, we have ice cream gift baskets, local food gift baskets, and custom order gift baskets. We can even deliver for you :)
Also, check out Casey's site (www.superstitionfarm.com) because he has some spectacular trees, pointsettas, and fun for the family this holiday season. Support your local farmer because HE supports you :)

Ok..they call me the Dessert Diva!!!
Whew...what a crazy wild time it has been lately. With the unemployment rate at it's highest I sure don't see it because finding a good employee has been one of our greatest orders to fill. Are we such Dessert Divas that our standards are too high? We don't think so. So..we decided to clear the place, and start working on finding a staff that provides you with the most memorable customer experience. Don't fret if you come by and we are not open...call us or stop by again soon. We should have our permanent staff trained and in place in the upcoming weeks.
While we are searching for the next American "Udder Delight Employee" you will find us more and more in the store along with our moovelous friends. Should you know of someone who meets our standards don't hesitate to send them our way. Send over an email sherene@udderdelightsaz.com and I will promptly interview them for our position(s).
Now on to the whole Dessert Diva creation. I don't typically brag about my cooking let alone my dessert fixings. I am more along the lines of seeking out that treat and skipping dinner so I can indulge in that extra scoop or slice. I decided to start really developing some out of this galaxy flavors and to my surprise I'm darn good at it. I developed this Pumpkin Cheesecake that you would swear you were eating it right out of the pie pan. Also, I have this incredible flair for putting too many fixings into my recipe (to my partners dismay because of cost) which seems to be real popular. Then, I play around with Casey's farm fresh ingredients and oh my what a flavor laboratory we have created. I don't know what the phrase for a man "diva" is but I'm going to come up with one for Casey. We have exploded with some really remarkable and award winning flavors.
So come on by, check out coffee with the Dessert Diva every Saturday morning. Let's talk Desserts and Delights.
Our Passion, your Treat,
Sherene

Help our store stay alive in these trying times...
Dear Friends, Family and Udders,
Whew...what a year it has been. We have seen some great times, some good times, and lately some not so good times. The economy has hit our little "local" store in a bad way. We need your help. We are calling out to the community, we need your support. Stop by our store and see what wonderful delights we offer, book a birthday party, buy dessert for everyone in your office or business, place an ice cream cake order for someone's special day, use our butter in your recipes, offer us some friendly advice on what you want and need and most of all...please visit our store.
As all of you know we are a local business. We are trying to stay alive, keep our employees working and weather this terrible economic storm. It's hard we must admit. Please tell everyone you know...we love serving you and want to continue but without your support we are afraid this dream will come to an end.
Get the word out...call us and let us know your ideas...any events you have coming up that you know we could be a part of???
With our sincerest hope,
Sherene, Casey, John and Rob

Birthday Parties Catered by Udder Delights
A message from Farmer Casey at Superstition Farm--
We had our first birthday party of the new season today. When the reservation was made last month it sure was hot! We were pleased to wake up this morning wishing we had a sweater as we did our morning chores. Ok, it was probably in the low 70's - but this is Arizona......
Sherene (my best friend and partner at Udder Delights) and I interviewed a pastry chef - Jayme. As luck would have it, she applied for the job as we were getting ready for the party. Her interview was to decorate these cakes! The theme was farm-ey as the family actually has a ranch in New Mexico. How did she do? We hired her! :)
The family enjoyed the farm tour and animals. Yes, Carmichael was on his best behaviour today - although he was trying to pass his goat droppings to kids as Milk Duds. Some went in our arena to ride the horses while udders camped out on the hayride as a comfy home base.
We had a photographer from the San Tans News come out to take some photos they will use for a story about our farm. Gordon Murray aka "Flash Gordon" (I swear I am not making this up!) came out and saw the party, our local food tasting we prepared for our Organic Food Club and sampled some of our homemade Ice Cream. I wonder if Carmichael will make ANOTHER news story?! I need his publicist......

Casey Stechnij is carrying his family's legacy one dairy product at a time.
The 1989 Gilbert High graduate owns Superstition Dairy Farms in east Mesa. A third-generation dairy farmer, he's finding ways to stay in business through farm tours, cheese, butter and an ice cream store in Gilbert.
Situated on 30 acres, Stechnij's is one of 88 dairy farms in Arizona. He oversees 1,000 cows, and knows each by number and personality. And with subdivisions and big-box retailers cropping up closer, being a farmer is tough.
"Traditionally farms have to get bigger, and as margins shrink and as costs increase farmers have had to do it by buying more land and getting more cows. And where we are out here, we're not able to expand any more. So we had to look at ways to diversify to survive our business," said Stechnij, 36.
"The other option would be to sell our land and move somewhere else to expand our dairy operation. But being a fourth-generation native of Mesa, this is my home and I like to stay here. And I think the community does, too," he said.
Two years ago, Stechnij began offering farm tours to urban dwellers. His hayride tours start at the barn and educate visitors on how milk is produced. The tour ends in front of Mooster's Mootique, with its homemade ice cream, cheese, butter and other cow and farm-themed gifts. Visitors can pet and feed goats, rabbits, chickens and a horse. The store also serves as a forum for other farmers to sell their homemade specialty products such as salsa, jams and pasta.
"To open up our place and share it with the community was an important part of our new direction," he said.
All proceeds from his side business go back into the farm. According to Stechnij, a milk producer receives 25 to 30 percent of the retail price of milk sold.
Expanding off the farm "Farms like to have a lot of space around them, but you work with what you have," he said.
But recently Stechnij took it a step further and opened a dessert shop a year ago in Gilbert called Udder Delights at Val Vista Drive and Warner Road. "We really wanted this to be a part of the community," he said. "It's where we can take ingredients off the farm and put into desserts and treats." The milk is taken to the local cooperative in Tempe where it is pasteurized and bottled.
Stechnij, then buys the milk from the cooperative. He makes daily more than dozen flavors from cotton candy to Oreo mint. "I can see it being a huge part of our operations. I can see Udder Delights being just as important making a finished product just as the cows are making the raw product," Stechnij said. He's responding to increasing cost of producing milk.
"You look at what a car costs, what a house costs. And you start translating that into farm equipment and land prices. Look at what a gallon of milk costs over the last 20 years. It's stayed very stagnant and we've seen very little changes. We're getting paid the same for our milk while our costs are increasing. And that's why farms have got to get bigger or diversify or sell out," he said.
Stechnij is hopeful of his budding dairy business and sees a bigger picture.
"We're in our infancy stage, but year after year our reliance on the cows to make the money and to support our families is going to be less as we see our diversified products," he said of his farm tours, specialty boutique and ice cream shop. "That is going to be the future of our farm for sure."

Psst! yeah you. Wanna try some handmade cheese? How about some butter? As you may know, Superstition Farm and Udder Delights are starting an organic food buying club (sign up here! http://www.superstitionfarmtours.com/organic.html ). We have been working on some butter and cheese recipes to offer all our friends on the farm and Udder Delights. We are at the point of getting some products out in limited quantities while the final details are ironed out and we go through the regulations of becoming a food manufacturer.
Currently, one can purchase nest run eggs at the farm and Udder Delights. Did you know all our baked goods at Udder are made with our eggs fresh from the farm? We also only use milk from the farm cooperative in our foods and at our 30 flavor Milk Bar. You can also buy real milk at both places - when was the last time you had real whole milk?!
So to our friends we are offering up a special treat. Sign up for the organic buying club by August 5, 2008 and get some special treats! We will be giving away some farmstead handmade butter and cheese to all our friends who join the club. We want your feedback! Tell us what your taste buds tell you! We are excited about offering up some unique products and flavors - Agave butter, anyone? Rosemary cheese? Get in my belly!
If you are not able to join the club, send me an email. While delicious, tasty and nutritious organic foods are not for everyone, dairy products certainly are! If you are interested in some local artisan butter, cheese and ice cream (special flavors not found at Udder Delights) let me know and I can keep you all updated.
Be a part of a our local movement. Your taste buds will never be the same.

Where did summer go?
Well we are about to exit the summer season and move on into the holiday season. Are you ready? We are not :) We had a blast with everyone this summer at the store. We had culinary students all summer and now we are seeking a permanent Pastry Chef to move us on in to our next phase of desserts. Could that be you? If so, call Sherene (602) 291-5088.
We are doing so much now at the store and it seems like every day is a new day with new products and new relationships being formed. We are now a scheduled delivery stop for the Organics Buying Club. We are working on showcasing our cheeses and butters in the next few weeks. Also, we are gearing up for our one year anniversary. Can you believe that Casey and I have been in this for an entire YEAR. Stop by our website www.udderdelightsaz.com because we are updating our site with all our changes.
Will write more later....thanks for stopping by our blog...drop me a note.

30 Flavors of Milk in the store!!!
Kudos to the Dairy Council (http://www.dairycouncilofaz.org/) for featuring Flavored Milk in their current promotion. Stop by our store and find out what all the buzz is about. We are featuring 30 flavors of milk at our "Milk Bar" and want to know what you think.
You might wonder how we turn our co op milk into flavors...that's the magic of it all...with our secret ingredients (and some not so secret) we can turn a regular white glass of milk into a moovelicious glass of carmel swirl. You have to see it to believe it.
We also have "free" handouts from the Dairy Council on Flavored Milk and the nutrient values and a FAQ brochure. Come educate yourself on MILK and what we are doing with it compliments of the Dairy Council of Arizona,...see you at Udder Delights!!!

A Question for the Farmer
"I have a question for the farmer."
I had an exciting day today. The cows let me off the farm to talk about them and Udder Delights to our new friends at KXAM radio. The program is called Culinary Confessions. I joined the Dairy Council in the studio and we talked for two hours centered around Ice Cream Month. I also brought treats from the store and flavors from our milk bar. Did you know we have 30 flavors of milk at UD?
It was great to share our business with the radio audience and educate people about modern farming. I have never been in a situation where people would say, "I have a question for the farmer." It's unfortunate that a question like that is such a novelty, however I am glad to be able to be in the position to talk about and educate people. We all need to know where our food comes from and how it is prepared.

Save the earth...EAT Ice Cream
Well at Superstition Farm we have been a part of the Mesa recycling program since it's inception many years ago. At last count we had about 15 blue barrels servicing the dairy, farm tour and all our homes. Imagine my dismay when we put up our shingle in Gilbert and found out businesses cannot participate in Gilbert's great recycling program. So you may find me loading up cardboard boxes, plastic containers and compost (things like banana peels from our banana splits and strawberry tops) to take back to the farm to be recycled.
Imagine how excited I was when Sherene found (and purchased!) environmental packaging. Our new containers are really corny! Really, they are made from corn. The process of making our cups and containers use almost half the fossil resources than other plastics. They will also break down into compost! So order your cake from Udder Delights and throw the cake container in your garden to be turned into plant food. I wish I could promise little cakes growing from your composted cake container - but rest assured they are always blooming at Udder Delights!
Read about our new containers below and help save the Earth by purchasing a cake today!
Sustainable Product How is NatureWorks® polymer made?
We start with an abundant, natural resource like field corn, which can easily and efficiently be reproduced each year. When plants grow, they use CO2 and sunlight to create carbon – a process called photosynthesis. At a wet milling facility, the starch is separated from the other components of the corn kernel and into dextrose. The dextrose, or sugar, is fermented, in a process similar to making yogurt, to create lactic acid. Lactic acid is a naturally occurring material that gives the “tang” to yogurt and makes your muscles ache after a work-out. From lactic acid we create a molecule called lactide. We remove water, crystallize it and create the high-performance polymer – polylactide (PLA) – which is branded NatureWorks® and is also used to make Ingeo™ fiber.

The Beginnings of an Ice Cream Store

So...where did we leave off. I know...we opened on Halloween weekend 2007 to a fanfare of delights. First off, we passed the health inspection with flying colors. Then we had to clean the store which was a huge task at hand. The previous "franchise" owner was pretty much tapped out sending all her money to the franchise and they closed the doors on her and the place sat empty for almost 4 months.
Then we cleaned, sanitized and kick the franchise right out to the curb (well the trash bin) and said good riddins..."We don't like your kind" and we were off with our new store and business.
Now that the store was cleaned and "de-franchised" we had to develop our line of ice cream. How to come up with flavors???? Well we all sat down and tasked ourselves with coming up with flavors. Of course, Casey wanted a Superstition Farm flavor to represent his blue collar culture and Sherene wanted a flavor that her son would love and be named after him. Thus the evolution of Superstition Farms and Monkey Moo (Sherene's little guy Jack is nicknamed Monkey). These two flavors are our top sellers.
Then we played around and came up with a number of other flavors. We also listened to our friends and family and came up with some really cool ideas. Our peanut butter flavors blends well topped with Strawberry for a PB&J experience. Our White Chocolate Raspberry is so good that we decided to use this flavor to support our Breast Cancer 3 day walk team.
Come by and taste our flavors...they changed sometimes daily as well experiment and use the local seasonal fruits. Our peach flavor right now is the best...

Ok..Friends, family, bloggers, and everyone..are you ready to find out about our store?
On October 4th, 2007 two friends of different IP and Zip Code addresses collided. Just like a Seinfeld episode, we took our blue collar world and our white collar world and began a trainride adventure of a lifetime.
You are probably thinking...ok drama king and queen..it's just an ice cream store. Oh no buddy...it's Udder Delights Local Foods and Desserts. We kicked that corporate franchise out the door and took over....no more big boxes for us...we want to save the community. Thus began...our story...
On October 26th against all doubters saying we couldn't get the store opened in 3 weeks...we did!!! Staffed with a friend of a friend, and his friends...we opened the door and said "Welcome to Udder Delights" and we say that each and every time someone walks into our store.
There wasn't a book, a recipe, or a dollar but we came through and by the support of our family and friends we now have developed into a force to be reckoned with..ask our Mascot, Buttercup.
Our names are Sherene Robinson and Casey Stechnij. We have been friends for about 10 years. We began our frienship by attending an art exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum where we were almost asked to leave because Sherene's Marie Antionette's wig touched a painting. It was a Halloween party at the Museum and we both dressed for the wrong period but that's a whole other story....
Both college educated and both hard working individuals making a difference day by day in our own seperate communities. Sherene brings in her white collar corporate culture and Casey brings in his blue collar local farm culture. We decided to mix it up, collide our worlds and develop the best local ice cream, local foods, and local dessert bar. Basically a sampling of all the ingredients from our lives.
Stay tuned and come by our store...we will update you with our successes, trials, tribulations and take you on a reality adventure only the local can handle.
Don't forget to drink your milk and eat your ice cream.
Sherene & Casey
